Certain Homeric epithets (think “rosy-fingered dawn”) are adopted here as house style. “Dimmycrat” comes from the great Finley Peter Dunne of Chicago’s portraits of Irish-American political views circa the Spanish American War. “Rethugs” comes from the blogosphere. “Confederepublican Party” is of my own domestic feciture. “Slangwhanger” is stolen from Mr. Mark Twain, who told the truth, mainly, but with some stretchers. In one of his European journals he referred to a local rag in the capital of Italy as Il Slangwhanger di Roma, instantly providing a job title that, shorn of geographic specificity, I had a chance to live up to.
